questions. Good luck !
Famous people
In this section we have collected biographies of famous Russian
writers, composers, poets, politicians, war heroes, artists and other famous people. The section
is far not complete, but we are hardly working on it and adding more biographies. To enter it, click
on the link below:
In this new library you can browse our collection of
stories, novels and poems by famous authors. In addition to this our library contains
some famous music, such as Russian National Anthem, and some other fragments. We hope
you will find what you are looking for. If not, please, contact us and we will find
the needed material for you.
Although we can not show all the music that we
would like to, we decided to put as much of it as possible to let our visitors
listen to the most beautiful and amazing songs by Russian performers. Please,
note that these songs are not protected by copyright and we do not violate any
laws by making them available online.
Here we have an absolutely unique on-line
collection of children's stories and fairy tales, that I have encoded from
my old vinyl discs. All of them are now 25-30 years old and very fragile.
I decided to preserve the records by digitizing and saving them on my computer.
Finally we have opened a section with all the
recipes of Russian food. We hope, you will make some dishes and tell us if
you like them and if they are very different from the food in your country.
January 1 - New Year / Новый год. Just as any other New Year, it is celebrated
at home with relatives or close friends. People drink champagne (it is a must), eat salads,
one of which is "оливье", make "холодец", marinated mushrooms, make sandwiches with red or black caviar and watch
New Year's program on TV. it is usually a concert, which lasts till midnight, and after that
all channels show different old movies. Also, people go outside and do fireworks, congratulate
each other. They also decorate a beautiful New year's tree with "Ded Moroz" (Russian Santa Claus)
under it, who brings gifts to everyone by morning :-)
January 7 - Christmas / Рождество. Although it is not widely celebrated in Russia,
people usually get together with their relatives or close friends and celebrate it almost as
a New year (see above).
January 13 - Old New Year / Старый новый год, a very popular holiday in memory of Old Calendar.
It is celebrated the same as a New Year - see above. You can say, that we celebrate New Year twice - on Dec 31 / Jan 1 and
on January 13th. Note, it is not celebrated during the night. We celebrate it in the afternoon, unlike the "New" New Year.
February 23 - Day of the [Soviet] Army / День советской армии. This holiday is not celebrated as it is called,
but rather as a Man's day. There is a Women's day, which is March, 8-th, and Man's Day, which is February, 23. *
March 8 - Women's Day / Международный женский день. Men usually congratulate women they know,
give them small gifts "and / or" flowers. This is a very popular holiday not only in Russia, but in many
Eastern-European countries.
Easter / Пасха - Two weeks after Catholic Easter. It is a religious holiday, so people, who
believe, go to church, but although most Russian people are non-religious, they celebrate it at home.
with "Пасха", that they buy or bake themselves and, of course, "Кулич". Very tasty thing.
May 1 - International Labour Day / Первое мая - День международной солидарности трудящихся.
Everyone celebrates this holiday by labour. Because most people in Russia have villages in a country-side,
they go there on the week from May 1st to May 9th and plant carrots, potatoes, etc.
May 9 - Victory Day / День победы. This is a very important holiday, and everyone celebrates it.
In the morning people watch the parade, which takes place on the Red Square, and visit each other and congratulate.
In the evening we watch the great salute, which is made in so called "Hero-cities".
June 12 - Independence Day / День независимости. This holiday is never celebrated,
so people go to their country-side villages. *
1 September - Day of Knowledge - it's the beginning of a school year. People go to school,
see the friends, they missed after the long summer. Young pupils, who go to school for the first time,
give flowers to their new teacher.
October 5 - Teacher's Day / День учителей. usually, students congratulate their teachers, and
sometimes give them flowers on this day.
